This newsletter shares the exciting results of the first Abu Dhabi High Tea and ninth Dubai High Tea!

On the 30th January guests in Abu Dhabi braved one of the coldest and windiest days of the year to raise AED 40,000 towards The Angel Appeal, a fantastic start to new partnerships and collaboration in that part of the UAE. Her Majesty's Ambassador Philip Parham, Mission to Seafarers Regional Director Rev. Dr. Paul Burt, members of the British Navy, and volunteers from the Girl Guides greeted visitors to the embassy garden, a beautiful setting in the heart of Abu Dhabi. Live music was provided by the talented Gareth Chan and Leonid Kuzmenko from New York University Abu Dhabi. Young Roge and Mark Jamieson entertained throughout the afternoon and live auction.

Abu Dhabi High Tea 30th January 2016
On the 6th February the High Tea in Dubai raised AED 200,000! Guests were able to meet British Consul General Paul Fox, American Consul General Paul Malik, Robert Woods CBE, chairman of Mission to Seafarers, Mission to Seafarers Regional Director Rev. Dr. Paul Burt, and members of the British Navy. Guests arrived to the sounds of the GEMS Music Academy Quartet, were kept laughing by Young Roge and Auctioneer Mark Todd, and treated to jazz tunes by Lucy Hunter-James.
The success of these events is due to the hard work, support, and dedication of many, but one person in particular has been the driving force behind it all and will be very missed. Theresa Dommett leaves The Angel Appeal this week as she and her husband Chris relocate to Kuwait. I am sure you join us in wishing them all the best, Kuwait will be lucky to have them!
Thank you to all who attended, volunteered, donated, sponsored, and supported The Angel Appeal at our 2016 High Teas, we look forward to seeing you next year!

Read our Winter Newsletter for an update on the RAK Half Marathon, the 2016 Marine Oil Ball at the Novotel Fujairah, and a brief introduction to Annie Ashworth, the new Development and Public Relations Manager at The Angel Appeal for Mission to Seafarers.
At 0600 on the 12th of February 55 runners from VOPAK Horizon gathered at the City Hotel in Ras Al Khaimah for the 10th Anniversary of the RAK Half Marathon. Thirteen relay teams of four runners and three individual runners completed the 21km course to raise AED 85,000 in support of The Angel Appeal. Thank you Ilne van Niekerk for answering our call for someone to step up when we lost a runner so the team wasn't disqualified! The RAK Half Marathon is the fastest half marathon in the world with runners holding a number of records. This is the seventh year VOPAK Horizon staff have participated for The Angel Appeal. Thank you Mr. Cees de Greve, and organisers Jasper Jansen, Vishnu Pillai, Shashi Kumar, and Joy Castillo. And a special congratulations to three runners aged 11 who participated in the relay; Yathunath Manikandan, Isabel van der Brug, and Ansgar van der Brug!
The Angel Appeal is grateful to the Novotel Fujairah for hosting yet another successful Fujairah Marine Oil Ball on the 18th of February in support of seafarers in the UAE. Over 200 guests enjoyed the evening in the beautiful setting created for the event, complete with a live jazz band for entertainment. The event would not have been possible without the generous support of General Manager Kareem Zaki, John Mittelstein, Marketing Manager for the Port of Fujairah, The Cellars in Fujairah, our many sponsors who donated prizes to the White Auction, and guests who bid and contributed to the success of the evening, raising over AED 15,000. It is inspiring to see people open their hearts to care for the needs of others that we depend so much on for the lives we enjoy.
We welcome Annie Ashworth, the new Development and Public Relations Manager at the Angel Appeal for Mission to Seafarers. She moved to Abu Dhabi with her husband Wayne and daughter Victoria (8) last summer. While new to the UAE she has been in the Gulf Region for 15 years working in operations management, organisational development, and relationship building on projects contributing to long-term social change across the GCC. She is enjoying meeting supporters of The Angel Appeal and looks forward to being in touch as we work together to support seafarers in our region. Finding a photograph was a challenge as she is usually behind the camera but if you recognize her at an event or function, please say hello!

Welcome to our Spring Newsletter! Here is an update of just some of the Angel Appeal's activity over the last few months!

World Health Day Distribution in Hamriyah Port on 7th April involved 1000 bags of clothing, sandals, toiletries and hygiene items distributed by HSBC with the support of DP World to some very happy seafarers.
On the 16th of April Windsurf Arabia ran a long distance challenge from Jebel Ali, around the Palm, to the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club. Riders collected sponsorship for and raised awareness of the Angel Appeal and Mission to Seafarers in the UAE. This kind of initiative in the community is fantastic and we hope to see more of it!

The Fujairah Tennis and Country Club hosted an Afternoon Tea on 22nd April benefiting the Angel Appeal. It was a beautiful, albeit slightly breezy afternoon. Fujairah on the east coast of the UAE is the second largest bunker anchorage worldwide. Annually Fujairah sees over 12,500 ships and 200,000 seafarers with 125 ships at any one time. Ships are sometimes 18 miles offshore with crews unable to get shore leave but with the same needs and difficulties as those in port. The MV Flying Angel is based in Fujairah and visits those ships as a floating seafarers centre, welcoming more than 10,000 seafarers on board every year.
On the 10th May the Angel Appeal with Farsi and Urdu speaking translators and staff from the Dubai Chamber conducted a survey of over 50 seafarers at the Dubai Creek. The most consistent requests were for access to drinking water, respite from the sun and heat for rest and sleep, and medical attention for frequent accidents. Water is a critical issue, over the summer months serious illnesses related to kidney failure are prevalent as the only water available to many is what they buy themselves on their already limited (and often unpaid) salary, and while public showers are available to them, there are cases of scalding and burning every summer as water boils in the pipes. Few dhows have storage facilities (refrigeration or cool boxes) for food and in Ramadan they often throw away excess while during the rest of the year they struggle to afford the basics. An article written by Parastoo Karimi of the Dubai Chamber about her experience talking to the seafarers during our survey will be published on our website. To find out how best to help please be in touch.
To wrap up our Spring activities, The Angel Appeal partnered with Du to mark Give and Gain Day by the Dubai Chamber on 19th May. Seafarers were gifted first aid kits, flip flops, a towel, hat, and toiletries. We were joined by RTA staff and enthusiastic security officers who kindly joined in and conducted crowd control.
A special Ramadan edition of the newsletter will feature upcoming distributions and activities.
